In our quest to be healthier individuals, we try to find the best way to achieve our goals — but just because you’re eating better and living healthier doesn’t mean you have to give up taste.

When you consider what your fruit and vegetable requirements are in a given day, it sounds almost impossible to meet this set goal. However, by incorporating certain mixtures such as smoothies you can get in your fruit and even vegetable quotient in one delicious shot. If you have never had a smoothie or made your own before, you’re in for a very simple and delicious treat. Making healthy smoothies at home doesn’t have to be difficult, but it can be an excellent way to get in your fruit for the day.

Start It Off Simply
Sometimes when you order a smoothie out, they may start with an ice cream base — this isn’t the way to go if you are after a healthy version of this favorite. Start off with a healthy liquid foundation such as fresh orange juice, low fat milk, or even low fat yogurt. This creates a nice thick foundation that is loaded with nutrients and which offers a delicious start to build off of.

Add in All the Fruit You Want
The fun of making smoothies at home and the way to ensure that it is healthy is to keep on adding the fruit. Add in fruits that you are familiar with and enjoy such as blueberries, strawberries and bananas. This will ensure your nutritional quotient, but make it delicious in the process. Then to take things up a notch, add in a new fruit each and every time to keep things interesting. Get creative and adventurous with your fruit choices — try pineapple, mango, or papaya for a more exotic blend. Add in raspberries for a perfect berry blend. Never tried kiwi? Add it into the mix and see how you like it in this form!

Make It a Meal
If you down a smoothie as part of a meal that has more fat than you need you’re defeating the purpose. You can truly look to a smoothie as a great meal supplement or replacement, so plan accordingly. A smoothie can be an excellent breakfast choice for example, one that allows you to get in all of your fruit requirements for the day. Alternatively if you need a good evening snack without a ton of fat, this is the way to go!

The best way to maximize your smoothie addiction is to take it beyond the regular recipes. Mix it up with these tips, and mix it into your day and diet, and you'll have delicious, easy, rewarding way to eat well and get your daily doses, too!
