Hollywood: Going Green or Getting Wasteful?

Celebs' risky green business 2008

While some critics unfairly pounce on celebs trying to do the right thing, some truly clueless stars with seemingly zero eco-consciousness are planting deep Gucci-clad carbon footprints on Mother Earth.

So, who's gunning for Public Greenemy #1? Here are some frontrunners who give new (negative) meaning to the term "jet-setter."

Reports have surfaced that Tom Cruise, while staying at his remote Colorado ranch, sent assistants to the nearest town to fetch Katie's favorite cherry soda. The kicker? They took his JET to run the errand and, in so doing, earned the diminutive star the nickname "emissions impossible."

Similarly, P. Diddy once hired a second private jet just to carry his Louis Vuitton luggage to St. Tropez. Oh, and at his picky-eater girlfriend's behest, he jetted in a different chef from Monaco so she'd have something "better" to eat while vacationing aboard Diddy's ginormous boat. PUFF Daddy indeed.

How could a guy behind the brilliant (and completely addictive) Google Earth and an investor in Tesla Motors -- the company developing the electric Tesla roadster -- throw such an excessively lavish wedding? The Google co-founder Larry Page and his betrothed Lucy Southworth threw their November wedding on a tiny Caribbean island, flying in 600 guests on (gulp!) private jets. Meanwhile, Google reportedly gives employees a $5,000 bonus if they buy a low-emission hybrid car. Maybe that's one way to carbon-offset its owner's transgressions.

Even the New York Times reporters on the presidential campaign trail have some carbon offsetting to do. They took the corporate jet home from Iowa, claiming it was cheaper than buying separate tickets.

Let's not forget the oft-mocked fashion maven Donatella Versace, who is notorious for jetting in her own furniture while traveling. This one speaks for itself.

And, while we're just as bummed as the next celeb-follower that the Golden Globes fell victim to the WGA strike, one upshot of the cancellation is that countless A-listers weren't winging in from parts unknown to attend the festivities. This saved our city loads of emissions and limo services -- usually charging $1K a day. We're glad they were parked instead of spewing exhaust.

We're all for supporting the writers and getting Tinseltown back on track, but maybe this downtime will get the industry to take a look at how truly disgusting all the excess is and, once a settlement has been reached, perhaps key players will jockey to reposition the way the kudos are handed out.

One can hope....

GREEN THUMBS UP TO...
...Estranged couple Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams, who celebrated their daughter Matilda's second birthday by gifting partygoers with roses instead of junk-filled goody bags.

...Rosanna Arquette, for patronizing the famed Pacific Palisades Farmers' Market. Perhaps she was buying rumored-boyfriend Paul McCartney some heart-healthy foods?

...The Sean Penn-directed film "Into the Wild" -- the true story about Chris McCandless, who graduates college and takes up residency in the Alaskan wilderness -- for the poignant eco-messages woven throughout.

... Q'orianka Kilcher (who starred as Pocahontas opposite Colin Farrell in 2005's "The New World"), for receiving the prestigious Brower Youth Awards, recognizing the 17-year-old's work as Youth Ambassador for Amazon Watch.
